I walked at least 30 miles in Old Bisbee yesterday.. no lie. And how exactly is it that you get to walk 30 miles in Tiny Town?
Volunteer.
By 7 am my pal Ben and I had re-built the stage and then assessed what would be needed to accomodate some that were now causing grief due to being sent wrong parts for the stage. While Ben was off getting supplies to build things, I was off and running.. ok, walking to 10,000 things before the start of the parade. I cannot even name all the things that needed to be done, but I got to everything on time, sweated my ass off (though my ass is still there.. no fair!) and managed to sneak away for 18 minutes to get a shower around 5:10 pm.
I got to photobomb The Mayor and City Councilman Gene Connors, got to be interviewed for tv (KOLD in Tucson) met several Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, saw damn near ever one of my friends in Tiny Town, and then... got to watch a party I had a major hand in designing go quite well. I was finally home close to 2 am after tracking down the last 2 people who needed to get paid for performing (at St. Elmo's no less..) and I pretty much passed out.
This weekend for me was a time to help make my town an even better place. And what I saw was that the folks came really got that our town has so much heart. And it's certainly not just a gay thing. I had more straight people on my bartending squad than gay.
I saw love and community in action... and I loved it. But nowhere near as much as I freakin' love this photo of me and City Councilman Gene Connors in drag!!!
