And then reality hit..

Yeah.. got a big old dose of reality over here tonight. After a good day, there was a question about my way long past drinking history and the legal ramifications of that. Now, I had some awful shit happen when I was drinking.. and I do have things that look not that good from almost 30 years ago. And guess what? This may mean I don't get to tour manage for these folks I am currently working for through the end of the tour.

I took a 27 year AA chip at a meeting the other day and my fucking drinking history may cause me to not do this job for these folks at the level I want to be working at.

Well... fuck.

Deep breath.

Reality.

There ya have it.

And let me say this.. it's all about being able to cross international borders with less hassle. Not about anything else.

Ran into this going into Canada about twenty years ago with someone who had a previous DUI conviction. It turned out it just depends on what border crossing you use. We never had trouble at the main crossing at Blaine, going to Vancouver, but in the white supremacist crossing up in Idaho we did. And the Canadian embassy people told us border guards could turn you around for any reason or no reason. I pointed out we never got turned around going to hockey games, only going to the Edmonton folk festival. But they can do whatever they want was my take on it. Supposedly you can get a waiver from the government in Ottawa that lets you in but we didn't have time for that, the festival was up and running. The next time we went up to a hockey game in Vancouver? No problemo.

Oh, and locals by that border crossing told me the way to get into Canada with no problems is to say you're going up there to shop. Probably won't help if you're on a tour bus but it might come in handy some day.
